“I realized that Southern Prohibition was on my wavelength and not afraid to get weird and take a risk with their art… it turned into beer that’s sitting in the cooler at the convenience store.”
Highlighting outstanding beer label artists
Most beer labels feature representational art. It’s just the nature of the beast. Aaron Troyer makes abstract art for the labels of Seventh Son Brewing in Columbus, OH.
I am extremely lucky to be catching Alexandria early in her career. It’s easy to look at her work and see that she has an amazing future in whatever path she takes. I hope she stays in the beer packaging. The shelves of my bottle store would certainly be improved exponentially if she did. Clearly Two Tides Brewing of Savannah, GA saw her amazing potential as well.
Every once in a while, I like to poke around and see what other label art beer writers are looking at and enjoying. Recently, Adam Nason from beerpulse.com recommended that I check out Dean McKeever’s work for Tree House Brewing. He wasn’t wrong – it’s great stuff! Dean is very versatile. As an artist working […]
In which I interview Jason Burke, another long-time art contributor to the Pipeworks Brewing brand. To say that Pipeworks Brewing is a local gem for us here in Chicago would be a “kick to the stones” to the science of gemology and a wet willy to mineralogy.
I first became aware of the work of Hired Guns Creative back in 2015 when I featured their pumpkin beer label from Longwood Brewing in our “Best Of…” post. Since then, we’ve played Twitter tag with Hired Guns on a few occasions, especially when a new label masterpiece hits the shelves. Leif Miltenberger was kind enough […]
If you were to tell me that Josh Cockrell was a time-traveling illustrator of fine botanical tomes that had been transported here from a Medieval European alchemist’s laboratory in order to properly document the zymurgical heraldry of Austin’s Jester King Brewery, I’d probably go right back to my beer without batting an eye. Cockrell’s body […]
As the sales and marketing manager for Mystic Brewery in Chelsea, MA, Louie Berceli has his hands full. The company has recently rebranded under his creative direction. Late last year, he sent me the following email: Hey there, I’m so happy I finally have a reason to email you. I’ve been a fan of your […]
Since I started this site, I’ve had lots of talented artists reach out to me and share their work. It’s probably the most rewarding thing about writing here for me. Aaron Scamihorn knew in his guts that his recent pumpkin beer label should have been counted among the finest of 2015, and he’s not wrong. It’s […]
I discovered Rachel Briggs’ WISEACRE labels entirely by accident on a trip to my local bottle store. The work jumped out at me immediately, in part due to its presentation, but mostly thanks to its character and uniqueness. Briggs brings a charming quality to label art that is sorely missing: washy inks, halftone screens, op-art patterns, […]
